May 10, 2025

This specific and unique vascular course aims at improving knowledge of anatomical access to the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta and supra-aortic vessels including sternotomy and first rib resection. Numerous vascular reconstruction procedures on supraaortic vessels can be performed. Open descending aorta and thoracoabdominal aortic repair is practiced. The course enables anatomic dissections and practice on fresh cadavers, with the contribution of experts in this field of complex vascular surgery. The thoracic course is designated for Advanced Vascular and Cardiac Surgeons.

Thoracic Simulator

The thoracic simulator is a life-like simulator with pulsatile flow. Several inlays w/o coronary arteries and w/o aortic valve are available. On the thoracic simulator a big variety of cardiac and vascular surgical procedures can be trained. Not only perfect technique but also good assistance is important and can be trained. Suture leakages are unmasked and extra stitches which sometimes are bailout stitches can be exercised. The thoracic simulator is also an ideal tool to discuss surgical strategies.

Abdominal Aorta Simulator

Abdominal model for “open aortic surgery” – The waterfilled aortic inlay, under pulsatile pressure, makes a lifelike training of the AAA repair possible. All arteries from the aorta are open and can be anastomosed.

Carotid Artery

Carotid artery disease refers to the narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries, which are the primary blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. This condition is often caused by atherosclerosis, a process in which fatty deposits, calcium and thrombus (plaque) build up on the arterial walls, leading to reduced blood flow and increasing the risk of serious complications such as stroke. Training in carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the classical procedure and important for the prevention of strokes. Training on a simulator allows to pass the learning curve in a safe environment ‘outside the patient’. The patient will be grateful to you.

Aortic Aneurysm

An open aortic aneurysm repair is a surgical procedure to treat an aortic aneurysm, a dangerous bulge in the body's main artery. During the surgery, the aneurysmal segment of the aorta is replaced with a synthetic graft through a large incision in the abdomen or chest. This procedure is performed to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing, which can be life-threatening.
