The Basic Vascular Surgery Techniques course in Lucerne/Sarnen is a three-day hands-on training program designed to teach fundamental skills in vascular surgery. Participants gain practical experience using realistic pulsatile models for open surgical techniques, arterial repair, and distal bypass procedures, earning 20 CME credits. The course is aimed at surgical trainees and specialists across multiple disciplines, providing a structured learning experience under the guidance of expert tutors.

Thoracic Simulator

The thoracic simulator is a life-like simulator with pulsatile flow. Several inlays w/o coronary arteries and w/o aortic valve are available. On the thoracic simulator a big variety of cardiac and vascular surgical procedures can be trained. Not only perfect technique but also good assistance is important and can be trained. Suture leakages are unmasked and extra stitches which sometimes are bailout stitches can be exercised. The thoracic simulator is also an ideal tool to discuss surgical strategies.

Abdominal Aorta Simulator

Abdominal model for “open aortic surgery” – The waterfilled aortic inlay, under pulsatile pressure, makes a lifelike training of the AAA repair possible. All arteries from the aorta are open and can be anastomosed.

Leg Simulator

The Leg Simulator is a life-like simulator with realistic vascular flow. Four dedicated inlays at the level of the popliteal artery and the fibular artery are available. On the leg simulator a wide range of vascular surgical procedures can be trained. Not only precise technique but also effective assistance is crucial and can be practiced. Suture leakages are exposed and additional stitches, as well as tunneling between separate incisions, can be exercised. The leg simulator is also an ideal tool to discuss surgical strategies and decision-making in peripheral vascular surgery.

Endovascular Complex

Complex endovascular aortic repair can be necessary in several specific clinical scenarios, usually involving complicated aortic pathology that cannot be adequately managed with standard endovascular techniques. Some common indications include aortic aneuryms extending into the juxtarenal, pararenal or visceral aorta or into the aortic arch, and aortic dissections. Image analysis and preprocessing is absolutely key.

Imaging, Preprocessing

Training in imaging and preprocessing for endovascular surgery is essential in this rapidly evolving field. Precise analysis and measurements are key and optimizes procedural planning and therefore proper device selection and strategic procedure planning. Training includes recognizing potential complications that can be identified through imaging, such as dissections, perforations, or thrombosis following endovascular interventions. As technology advances, ongoing education in imaging modalities and preprocessing methods will remain integral to the practice of endovascular surgery.

Endovascular Aneurysm

An endovascular aortic aneurysm repair(EVAR) is a surgical procedure to treat an aortic aneurysm, a dangerous bulge in the body's main artery. When the thoracic rather than the abdominal aorta is concerned, the procedure is called TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair). During the procedure, the aneurysmal segment of the aorta is excluded from the circulation by placing and deploying a stentgraft, typically introduced via small incisions in the groin. This procedure is performed to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing, which is an acutely life-threatening event with high mortality.
